Departments and agencies of the United States federal government. All US Federal Government sponsor codes are assigned to a "Type" attribute that is generally analogous to a cabinet level department. Some codes (e.g., Department of Defense) are assigned one or more "Sub Type" attributes that further distinguish a code in large, complex organizations.

Other governmental agencies, including: cities; counties; other states; sovereign tribal governments; foreign governments or governmental agencies; multi-national organizations such as the United Nations; or, quasi-governmental agencies or special districts, such as a water or pest control district. These sponsor codes are further distinguished with the "Type" indicator.

40 - Subnational/States: New Mexico Department of Transportation, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation
41 - Nongovernmental: New codes are not currently being added to this category and this sponsor type will be removed in the future. Please use sponsor category 05 or 07 for non-profit NGOs.
42 - Intergovernmental: European Union, United Nations
43 - Foreign Government: Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences
