Systemwide Community Safety
VUE Draft Guidelines and Recommendations: Seeking Community Feedback
Monday, May 9, 2022
As set out in action 1.14 of the UC Community Safety Plan, the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP) has formed a systemwide workgroup that includes students, faculty and staff to recommend uniform, equipment and vehicle standards for every tier in campus safety models, including for police officers, public safety providers and mental health responders.
To this end, UCOP formed the Vehicles, Uniforms and Equipment (VUE) workgroup. The workgroup included representatives from every campus, and individuals included undergraduate and graduate students, staff and vice chancellors, counseling and psychological services providers, and police officers, among others.
After an extensive review and discussion process, the VUE workgroup has developed draft guidelines and recommendations. Having been shared with President Michael V. Drake, M.D., and the Council of Chancellors, the UC Office of the President is now seeking community feedback. Ultimately, these recommendations are a starting point for the changes envisioned by the UC Community Safety Plan, and should be seen as a living document and process.
We invite the UC community to share feedback, questions or comments on the draft guidelines and recommendations through June 3, 2022, by sending an email to CampusSafety@ucop.edu. Feedback will be considered by the workgroup in advance of the official acceptance of these recommendations.
