Institutional Research and Academic Planning
National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey
Every year, the National Science Foundation (NSF) administers a nationwide Higher Education Research & Development survey of research expenditures by all academic institutions. The results are available to the public on the NSF website, and represent one of the best sources of comparative data on academic research and related activities. This information is used extensively by campuses, by the Office of Research & Graduate Studies, and in the UC Annual Accountability Report.
IRAP is responsible for coordinating the submission of NSF R&D Survey data for all UC campuses, as well as the Office of the President. Draft submissions are prepared by IRAP, based on financial system data originally provided by campuses, and these drafts are reviewed and reconciled in collaboration with campuses.
