UC Cost Threshold for Minor Renovations
CCCI-Based Cost Threshold for Minor Renovations at UC Facilities
The University of California’s Sustainable Practices Policy specifies that renovation projects that do not constitute a major renovation (as defined in the policy, item III.A.2.a.) must still meet specific sustainability requirements. This includes achieving (at a minimum) a LEED-Interior Design & Construction (ID+C) Certified rating. This requirement applies to projects whose estimated project cost at the time of budget approval exceeds a specified threshold.
This threshold is tied to the California Construction Cost Index (CCCI) to adjust for inflation. The benchmark was initially set at a project cost of $5 million when the CCCI was 5000.
In 2024, the policy was updated to define an annual cost threshold that UCOP sets for each fiscal year based on the current CCCI. In March of each year, UCOP will set the threshold for the following fiscal year that will apply to any projects seeking budget approval after July 1 . This annual update will be posted on this webpage.
This document provides the current and historic cost threshold over which renovation projects must comply with the LEED certification requirement.
