Spotlight Awards
Overview
As part of promoting our strategic objective of mitigating and managing risk to protect the University's resources, the Chief Risk Officer has established a recognition program to spotlight the achievements of our risk and safety professionals systemwide for exceptional projects and engagements that contribute to advancing our core mission.
Awards are presented in six program areas:
- Continuity of Operations
- Employment Practices Liability
- Environment, Health & Safety
- General Liability/Auto
- Professional Liability
- Workers' Compensation
Each program presents awards based on two criteria:
- Innovation – Awarded to risk and safety professional(s) who develop successful and lasting strategies for minimizing the impact of risk to the University
- Collaboration – Awarded to risk and safety professional(s) for achievements that exemplify campus or system-wide collaboration
Awards are presented at Risk Summit.

- 2023 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Continuity of Operations: Grant Madden, UC San Diego Health – Developed an innovative HVA methodology
- 2023 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Continuity of Operations: Tara Brown, UCLA – Enhanced resilience via collaborative partnerships
- 2023 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Environment, Health & Safety: Tarran Richardson, Veronica Thron and Krisztina Forward, UC Davis EH&S and School of Vet Medicine – Developed the UC Davis Lab Safety 201:Application Class
- 2023 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Environment, Health & Safety: UCSD Health & UCSD Campus – Successfully implemented and integrated the EPIC platform
- 2023 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Professional Liability: Mark VanderLinden, UC Davis Health – Successfully implemented the CANDOR program
- 2023 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Professional Liability: Julie Schneider, UC Irvine Health – Valuable contributor to the PL risk management program
- 2023 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Workers' Compensation: Judy Rosen, UC San Francisco – Innovated the Workers' Compensation program
- 2023 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Workers' Compensation: Patrick Kaulback, Stephen Furman and Louise Allman, UC Irvine Health – Reduced custodial injuries via the Targeted Injury Prevention Program
- 2023 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Employment Practices Liability: Angela Lucien, John Toal, Kate Mente and Bill Teeling, UC San Francisco – Outstanding use of the non-litigated EPL program
- 2023 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – General Liability: EH&S, Fire, Facilities, and Police, UC Riverside – Gage Basin debris clean-up
2019 Spotlight Award Winners
- 2019 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Environment, Health & Safety: Barbara Haynor, UC San Diego – Developed innovative and life-saving CPR and AED outreach, training and recognition programs
- 2019 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Environment, Health & Safety: Michelle Sityar, Mike Williams, Alexandra Norris, Allison Akbaroff, Brenda Gonzalez, Amanda Cruz and Robert Magcalas, UCLA – Conducted the Safety Olympics event to reduce injuries in housing facilities
- 2019 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Environment, Health & Safety: Devin B. Wicks, Lindy West, Cori Evans, Greg Ryan, Mike Imazumi, Stephanie Ngan and Roy Berke, UC Berkeley – Implemented the loss prevention initiative Stretch & Flex
- 2019 Spotlight on Innovation Award – Workers' Compensation: Cassie Taan, Alex Meister, Armando Melendez, Mark R. Claiborne, Moses Preciado and Gustavo Plascencia, UC Riverside – Improved workplace safety through the Dining Services R'Safety program
- 2019 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – Workers' Compensation: John Seaman, Rick Alvarado and Jessica Callander, UC Santa Barbara – Developed Facilities Management training matrix based on job descriptions
- 2019 Spotlight on Collaboration Award – General Liability: UC Davis Youth Protection Workgroup, UC Davis – Implemented the "Activities and Programs with Minors" policy
- 2019 Spotlight on Innovation Award – General Liability: David McHale and Ken Kerman, UC Santa Barbara – Developed and implemented a program to analyze, prioritize and abate hazards associated with physical building conditions
