Safety and Security Training

UCOP offers a variety of programs to train employees on various safety and security procedures. This page summarizes some training, however, additional training may be available. You can contact the Work Management Center at (510) 987-0600 or building.services@ucop.edu for more information.

Building Safety Training

Orients employees to important building features including, exits, kitchen hazards, bathroom locations, fire extinguishers, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), oxygen packs and first-aid kit locations.

Personal Safety Training

The UC Berkeley Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit (CPU), coordinates and delivers presentations and other general outreach efforts. The officers can be scheduled to meet with groups, participate in events and provide safety and security information, as needed. 

Staff can also help identify other resources and authorities that might be appropriate and beneficial for a particular outreach need.

Active Shooter Training

Riverside: Twice a year, at the Intellicenter, the UC Riverside Police Department offers a training course that covers how to best respond in an active shooter situation, as well as what you can expect from responding police officers. For more information, refer to the Crisis Response Guide.

Franklin-Broadway Campus: The UC Berkeley Police Department Crime Prevention unit provides a presentation on “Targeted Violence.” For more information and scheduling details, please visit the Berkeley UCPD website.

Sacramento: The UC Davis Police Department supports the Sacramento campus. For more information on safety training, please visit their website.

Washington, D.C.: There is currently no active shooter training offered at the UCDC campus.

AED/CPR Training

This training course covers how and when to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and earns you a two-year certification in AED/CPR/Oxygen. In-person, virtual and blended options are available. For more information or to find a class near you, please visit the American Red Cross website

Fire Extinguisher Training

Riverside: This brief five-minute course provides an introduction to using a portable fire extinguisher and is available to employees as needed. The course covers the common types of fires as well as the PASS technique for using a fire extinguisher. For more information or to take the training, please visit UCR Risk and Safety Training.

Franklin-Broadway Campus and UC Berkeley: To arrange a fire extinguisher training at UC Berkeley, you need to arrange the site-set up and schedule the location of the training separately. To arrange the site-set up, email Facility Services at fs-newsr@Berkeley.edu.
