Jiseon Kim

GFI Fellow - Class of 2021

Undergraduate student, history, minor in public affairs
UCLA

DESCRIPTION

2021-22 GFI student fellow

Jiseon’s project will build on the findings released by the California Policy Lab in January 2021, which found that many eligible households in California leave CalFresh every year primarily due to administrative paperwork burdens. It will focus on the specific factors that influence the retention rate of students at UCLA enrolled in CalFresh using administrative data regularly collected by the CalFresh Initiative at UCLA (e.g., office hour case tracking, email correspondences, follow-up email responses). Students in higher education are a notable population to assess given their constantly evolving financial & living situation and stringent eligibility requirements & student exemptions. The primary purpose of this project is to create and enhance services provided by the CalFresh Initiative at UCLA and other CalFresh Outreach organizations at institutions of higher education throughout LA County and CA to ensure eligible students remain in the program throughout college/university, thereby reducing student food insecurity and increasing financial stability.
