Sarah Hawthorne

Associate Campus Counsel, UC Berkeley & Office of General Counsel, Oakland

Sarah Hawthorne has been at the University of California, Berkeley since 2003, specializing in the implementation of disability laws (access/accommodations), serving as the Assistant Provost, Disability Compliance for the Office of Academic Compliance & Disability Standards.  In addition to serving as Associate Campus Counsel/Assistant Provost, Disability Compliance, she is Assistant Provost for Academic Compliance (faculty misconduct).

Prior to the University, she was a senior attorney at the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education (San Francisco Office), and at West Texas Legal Services, Fort Worth. She is a graduate of Baylor University and the University of Texas Law School (Austin), followed by an internship with the United Nations Subcommission on Human Rights (Geneva/London) and the International Court of Justice (Hague). Her legal career has focused on creating procedures and practices that promote equity and prevent discrimination. Other areas of legal expertise include employment, housing, consumer, and probate, as well as state/federal agency administrative process.
