Chief Deputy General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, Litigation

Karen Jensen Petrulakis joined the Office of General Counsel as Deputy General Counsel for Litigation, Labor & Employment in January 2011, assuming additional responsibility for overseeing the Governance section in July 2012. Prior to joining the office, Ms. Petrulakis was a partner in the Litigation and Labor & Employment groups of Crowell & Moring LLP in San Francisco, where she handled complex commercial litigation and employment litigation on behalf of the University of California and other public entities as well as private companies in a wide range of industries.

As Chief Deputy General Counsel since April 2013, Ms. Petrulakis continues to oversee the Litigation section of the Office of General Counsel, which encompasses a broad range of litigation across the system.  In addition, Ms. Petrulakis consults on the most politically sensitive and highest visibility legal issues and advises on legal strategy across all practice areas.  She is also a key participant in budget planning and heads implementation of OGC's Strategic Plan.  She received her B.A. in 1988 (with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of California at Berkeley and her J.D. in 1993 from Stanford Law School, where she served as Notes Editor of the Stanford Law Review. Ms. Petrulakis currently serves as Executive Law Chapter Chair for Stanford Law School and as a member of Stanford Law School’s Board of Visitors.  She also serves on the State Bar’s Litigation Section Executive Committee.
