Elisabeth R. Gunther

Chief Campus Counsel, UC Merced

Elisabeth Gunther became the first full-time Chief Campus Counsel for the Merced campus, effective July 1, 2015, after assuming the role as the Campus Counsel in 2008.  She worked in the Office of the General Counsel since 2006, managing a wide span of legal issues, from environmental compliance to student discipline to public contracting, with particular focus on the Merced 2020 initiative.  Elisabeth has developed a deep understanding of UC Merced’s culture and legal needs, and has become an important strategic partner with campus leadership.

Prior to joining OGC, Ms. Gunther was an Assistant City Attorney with the cities of Santa Rosa and San Francisco and was in private practice as a partner in the law firms of Beveridge & Diamond and Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe. Ms. Gunther graduated from the University of Michigan (A.B.1979) and the University of Chicago (J.D.1983). She also studied at the London School of Economics.
