The Protected Information and Intellectual Property Value Estimator (PIIPve)

The Protected Information and Intellectual Property Value Estimator (PIIPve) applies a practical methodology for organizations responsible for protected information and intellectual property to calculate the potential (or actual) cost of a breach.

The purpose of this tool is to help organizations responsible for protected information and intellectual property understand the financial impact of an information security breach so they can evaluate and recommend the appropriate investments necessary to mitigate the risk of a breach. This helps reduce potential financial exposure while strengthening the organizations reputation as a reliable protector of protected information and intellectual property.

This tool will not make decisions for you, but it will help you organize your thinking as you consider the enterprise risk management implications of a breach to your organization’s protected information and/or intellectual property.

The general approach of this tool uses a detailed, methodical process to consider a variety of potential factors affecting the cost of a breach to protected information or intellectual property. The total impact is expressed in a dollar amount, but the components building to that total impact represent a combination of perceptions, actions, and consequences of a variety of stakeholders rather than dollars alone.
