Biography

Steve Garber is the Business Services Director in the Office of the Chancellor at UC Berkeley, where he is responsible for the unit's budget and financial management, human resources and facilities. Steve began his career at UC Berkeley in 2001 as the Operations Manager of the Full-time MBA Admissions Office in the Haas School of Business, and subsequently took on a central campus role as Manager of Finance and Administration for the Office of Human Resources in October of 2005. He then joined the Chancellor's Office in his current role in April of 2008.
Steve became active in the Berkeley Staff Assembly (BSA) in 2004 while participating in the initial pilot of BSA's Staff Mentorship Program as a mentee. He was then elected to the BSA Coordinating Committee and became a member of the Career Development Committee (CDC) and eventually its chair. Under his leadership the CDC issued its first Executive Report on the Mentorship Program, covering the first three cycles of the program, which is now in its fourth cycle with 54 matched pairs of mentors and mentees.
Steve's background is in both biology and non-profit administration. Before arriving at Cal he served in various administrative functions at a variety of non-profit organizations in the Bay Area. He received his Bachelor's degree from Brandeis University and his Master's degree in Molecular Biology from San Francisco State University. He spends his free time as an active singing member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus.
