Biography

In 1985 Alonso Noble joined Landscape Services of UC San Diego as a groundskeeper. From that position, he rose through the ranks, becoming a lead groundskeeper, equipment operator, senior grounds supervisor, until his current position of assistant superintendent. He leads a team of 16 landscape technicians assigned to eight housing areas, five dining facilities, the University House and the child care complex. He manages the memorandum of understanding between Facilities Management and Housing, Dining and Hospitality for the landscape maintenance of the latter.
With a brief break between 2008 and 2009 Alonso managed the waste and recycling program of the campus, raising awareness of both campus and off-campus entities regarding waste reduction and recycling. In June 2008, UC San Diego reported a recycling rate of 67%, exceeding the UC mandated target of 50%.
Alonso earned his Bachelor's Degree with a major in Political Science from the St. Louis University of the Philippines. He is an alumnus of the UC San Diego Extension, having completed a professional certificate in facilities management. He is a graduate of the Management Skills Assessment Program, a joint venture of the southern campuses of the University of California. Currently he is pursuing a certificate in landscape management at the Mira Costa Community College of Oceanside.
Alonso is an active volunteer in the community and on the UC San Diego campus. He is a member of the Detention Ministry of the Diocese of San Diego and regularly visits the inmates in the Vista Detention Center. As a volunteer with the Elizabeth Hospice, he visits and offers services and comfort to the terminally ill. As a member of the Campus Emergency Response Team, he works with other volunteers to support emergency and law enforcement personnel during emergencies and disasters. He helps prepare and serve meals for the homeless at Brother Benno's of Oceanside and the North County Solution for Change, a shelter for battered women.
He is excited by the opportunity to serve the Staff Association of UC San Diego as chair-elect of its executive board. The Staff Association is a veritable reservoir of brilliant thoughts and innovative ways to improve work life and can truly become a vehicle through which staff can advance their ideas to the highest level of administration. As chair-elect, Alonso envisions pursuing all available ways to reach more staff to become active, paying members, highlighting the benefits of membership and encouraging participation and dialogue in matters affecting staff. He looks forward to honorably representing the Staff Association of UC San Diego in the Council of UC Staff Assemblies, working with other delegates to strengthen and professionalize the organization.
