Fellowship Programs for Diversity: The Office of the President of the University of California has developed a number of programs designed to increase participation of scholars at various points along the spectrum of higher education. The Dissertation-Year Fellowship Program and the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program are two of these, and are designed specifically to encourage doctoral candidates and Ph.D. holders of exceptional ability to pursue careers as faculty in fields where they are underrepresented. The fellowship programs provide financial support as well as faculty mentoring. The current fellows in each program are listed by area of study.
The President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers postdoctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding scholars for academic appointments at the University of California and other research universities by supporting them in the conduct of research, and by providing mentoring and guidance towards advancement of their academic careers.
The University of California's Dissertation-Year Fellowship Program provides support to outstanding Ph.D. candidates during their dissertation year and is designed to assist doctoral students planning academic careers to receive faculty mentorship as well as information and advice as they prepare to become postdoctoral fellows or candidates for faculty positions.
The President's Task Force on Faculty Diversity will conduct a comprehensive program review of faculty diversity efforts at each campus in Fall 2005.
The program review will include an analysis of faculty headcount and hiring data over time and by field to analyze trends and identify campus-specific concerns. Teams of 3-4 faculty members from the task force will conduct site visits at each campus. The site visits will include meetings with senior academic administrators, members of senate Committees on Academic Personnel (CAPs), senate diversity committees, graduate deans, department chairs, and campus diversity committees. The review will be concluded with a written report focused on successful strategies for increasing faculty diversity. Rosina Becerra, Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Diversity at UCLA, is chair of the task force.
Affirmative Action Guidelines for Recruitment and Retention of Faculty -- The January 2, 2002, guidelines issued to the Chancellors that outline the University's affirmative action obligations as a Federal contractor as they apply to faculty recruitment, promotion and retention procedures.
