Thursday's Network Outage

February 28, 2013

From: Shirley Bittlingmeier, Client Services Officer, Information Technology Services

As many of you are well aware, a network outage occurred yesterday at approximately 1:30 p.m. The outage affected all UCOP buildings and systems, including email, AYSO, and Internet access. The ITS network team worked with our network service provider to troubleshoot the issue. Because both the main network and backup devices were affected, multiple reboots were required to fully restore services by 3:30 p.m.

ITS made every effort to communicate to customers about the issue: The IT Service Hub newsfeed and IT Service Desk voicemail were updated throughout the outage. In addition, we issued a UCOP voicemail broadcast, made phone calls to campus customers, and walked through the buildings to talk to customers.

After further discussion with the service vendor, ITS will schedule upgrades to fix the problem permanently. We will make every effort to minimize downtime. Please note that, as a separate issue, the upgrade scheduled for this Saturday will proceed as planned in the Franklin Building. Each floor will experience a network outage of 20-30 minutes some time between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., March 2. Access to services such as SharePoint and AYSO from outside the building will not be affected.

Again, we apologize for the work disruption Thursday’s outage caused. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the IT Service Desk at 987-0457 or ServiceDesk@ucop.edu.
